Supporting Employees Experiencing Grief and Traumatic Loss

Grief and loss can take many forms, such as the death of a loved one, loss of a relationship or pet, or even adjusting to a move or a job change. Research has shown that grief is cumulative and can lead to poor mental and physical health outcomes and habits, presenteeism, and loss of productivity and engagement at work. This session will discuss:

  • Why supporting grief and loss in the workplace matters
  • The importance of knowing your workplace policies and benefits to support grieving employees
  • How to cultivate a culture of support that employees use and trust.

Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD)—A Global Perspective

Medical assistance in dying (MAiD) regulations vary across different countries with Belgium, New Zealand, Spain, Canada and certain U.S. states allowing MAiD under certain circumstances. In recent years, Canada has allowed MAiD for those with irremediable illnesses causing lasting physical or psychological impairment, even if death isn’t foreseeable. In the U.S., access to MAiD is more restricted and only legal in a few states; to be eligible to qualify, patients must be diagnosed with a terminal illness expected to result in death within six months. In this session, attendees will learn about Canadian and U.S. regulations, global trends surrounding medical assistance in dying, and how employers can assist employees who may choose MAiD.

Substances, Changing Attitudes and Their Impact on the Workplace

This session will answer the following questions:

  • What is addiction, and how is it related to mental health?
  • How do you spot addiction?
  • How is addiction treated, and why are benefit plans important?
  • How do you celebrate recovery?
